Botswana

Welcome to the blog about this stunning Southern African country!

Botswana: A Unique Country with Unmatched Wildlife

Botswana is famous for its wildlife, especially in the northern part of the country. In the southwest, the Kalahari Desert is misleadingly named—it’s actually a semi-desert teeming with wildlife. In the southeast, the landscape resembles the vegetation of South Africa and the foothills of the Drakensberg Mountains.

Among the many animals you can find here are elephants, lions, zebras, giraffes, oryx, antelopes, wildebeest, cheetahs, springboks, crocodiles, meerkats, and even termites.

Vast Natural Parks

The most famous natural park is the Moremi Game Reserve in the Okavango Delta, the world’s largest inland delta. An inland delta? Yes, the Okavango River flows into… nothing! The water evaporates, creating a sprawling wetland that is a paradise for wildlife. This park is a must-visit.

The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is Botswana’s largest natural park, covering an area bigger than the Benelux countries! This semi-arid park is renowned for the San people who live there.

A Central Country in Southern Africa

Botswana is at the heart of Southern Africa and enjoys many advantages. To the south, it borders its large neighbor, South Africa: Gaborone, Botswana’s capital, is just 9 miles (15 km) from the South African border. To the west and north, Namibia shares many geographical features with Botswana, including the Kalahari Desert.

In the north, Botswana has a 200-meter (656-foot) border with Zambia! Geographers are divided, and some consider this spot a quadripoint, where four countries meet. To the east, Botswana borders the more hilly Zimbabwe. Francistown, Botswana’s second-largest city, is also just 9 miles (15 km) from the Zimbabwean border.

In this region, just an hour’s drive from Botswana, don’t miss the Victoria Falls, which form the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia.
